According to tradition, in the early 1800s, local sculptor Durgacharan Acharya had a divine vision and spent four years meticulously molding this gigantic terracotta Shiva idol with his own hands.
During the 1971 Liberation War, the original historic idol was severely damaged by occupying forces with explosives; after independence in 1971, master sculptors from across Bengal painstakingly restored the colossal 28-foot statue to its original glory.
The temple is managed by a public trust and serves as a major venue for Maha Shivaratri and annual religious fairs (Mela) attracting over 100,000 pilgrims.
