Nikli Haor

Nikli Haor is an immense seasonal wetland basin situated in the Kishoreganj district, roughly 110 kilometres northeast of Dhaka. During the monsoon months between June and October, torrential rain and upstream runoff from the Meghalaya hills submerge the vast paddy fields beneath metres of water, converting the entire landscape into an astonishing inland sea where distant villages appear as floating green islands.

The hub of tourist activity is the Nikli Embankment and Beribadh area, where traditional motorized wooden boats, known locally as trawlers or bajra boats, await travellers. Cruising across the open haor waters offers an extraordinary sense of boundless horizon, gentle breezes, and glimpses of water-submerged Hijol and Karoch trees that form vital aquatic sanctuaries.

As late afternoon approaches, the open skies above Nikli Haor display vivid shades of orange, magenta, and gold reflecting on the placid waters. Visitors often combine a boat trip with a visit to Chhatirchar, an enchanting submerged swamp forest patch often dubbed the mini-Ratargul of Kishoreganj, where tree canopies emerge gracefully above the waterline.

In the dry winter months, the waters recede entirely, revealing fertile silt-laden boro rice plains crisscrossed by cattle carts and walking trails. However, it is the watery monsoon spectacle that has established Nikli as one of Bangladesh's favourite weekend getaways for city dwellers seeking pastoral tranquility.

The haor basin of greater Mymensingh and Sylhet is a tectonic depression formed over millennia by shifting river channels and seismic subsidence. Historically, the inhabitants developed a distinctive amphibious lifestyle, farming boro paddy during winter and surviving as fishermen and boatmen when floodwaters engulfed the plains each summer.

Nikli was an important inland river trading port during the late Mughal and British colonial periods, connecting agricultural surplus from the haor interior to the Brahmaputra and Meghna river networks.

In recent years, the construction of paved approach roads and reinforced embankments opened the remote wetland to widespread eco-tourism, transforming the local rural economy while preserving traditional waterborne heritage.

July to September: Peak monsoon season; boundless water, lush green submerged foliage, and vibrant boat traffic.

October: Autumn transition; crystal clear skies with white clouds and calm waters before receding.

November to February: Dry winter season; waters dry up completely, replaced by vast emerald green boro rice fields.

March to June: Pre-monsoon period with variable water levels and dramatic seasonal cloud formations.
