Overview
Gandhi Ashram Trust (Gandhi Smriti Sangrahashala) is a globally significant historical institution and peaceful rural sanctuary located at Jayag in Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali district, roughly 25 kilometres north of Maijdee (Noakhali town). Established during Mahatma Gandhi's legendary peace mission to Noakhali in 1946–1947, the ashram stands as an enduring monument to non-violence (Ahimsa), interfaith harmony, and rural self-reliance.
In late 1946, amidst severe communal tensions preceding the Partition of India, Mahatma Gandhi walked on foot through 47 remote villages of Noakhali for four months to preach peace and heal communal divides. Deeply moved, local philanthropist Barrister Hemanta Kumar Ghosh donated his ancestral estate and entire property to establish the Gandhi Ashram Trust.
The complex features a beautifully maintained historical museum displaying rare black-and-white photographs of Gandhi's Noakhali barefoot march, his personal spinning wheel (Charkha), handwritten letters, wooden sandals, and commemorative documents. Shaded by ancient trees and peaceful ponds, the ashram continues active humanitarian work, running schools, rural health clinics, and traditional Khadi handloom weaving workshops.
Visiting Gandhi Ashram offers travelers and historians a deeply inspiring and reflective journey into one of the most poignant humanitarian chapters of modern South Asian history.
