Shimul Bagan

Located in the Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj, right on the banks of the Jadukata River near the Indian border, Shimul Bagan is a massive, incredibly photogenic tree garden. Spanning over 100 bighas of land, it holds the title of the largest Shimul (red silk-cotton) tree garden in Bangladesh. The garden is meticulously planted, with over 2,000 trees aligned in perfect geometric rows.

For most of the year, the garden is a quiet, green sanctuary offering shade to visitors and local villagers. However, during the spring months of February and March, the entire garden transforms into a spectacular, surreal landscape. The trees shed their green leaves and burst into vibrant, fiery red blossoms, creating a massive red canopy above and a thick red carpet of fallen petals on the ground below.

This seasonal phenomenon draws thousands of tourists, photographers, and nature lovers from across the country. The contrast of the vivid red flowers against the backdrop of the clear blue sky, the sandy banks of the Jadukata River, and the distant Meghalaya hills makes Shimul Bagan a must-visit destination in early spring.

The garden is entirely man-made. It was planted in 2002 by a local prominent businessman and nature enthusiast named Zainal Abedin. He meticulously planted the saplings in perfectly straight lines.

Originally intended to prevent riverbank erosion and beautify the area, the garden's sheer scale eventually turned it into one of the most famous tourist attractions in the Sylhet region after the founder's passing.

Spring (Mid-February to March): The peak season when the trees are entirely devoid of leaves and covered purely in red flowers.

Monsoon (June to September): The garden is lush green and peaceful, but it will not have the famous red flowers. The nearby Jadukata River is very full and beautiful.

Winter: The trees lose their leaves and look somewhat barren before the spring bloom.
