Overview

Shakuni Lake (popularly known as Shakuni Dighi) is the magnificent centerpiece and premier recreational attraction of Madaripur city. Spanning over 1.5 kilometres in length and covering approximately 50 acres in the heart of the municipal center, this historic water reservoir was excavated in the early 20th century to mitigate urban flooding and provide drinking water.

In recent years, the lakefront underwent a comprehensive modernization transformation into a world-class urban leisure zone. The perimeter is lined with wide, brick-paved walking promenades, shaded benches under blooming royal poinciana (krishnachura) trees, floating musical fountains, pediatric play parks, and an open-air cultural amphitheater.

A monumental 71-foot Liberation War Memorial Tower (Bijoy Stambha) stands proudly along the western shore, honoring the brave freedom fighters of Madaripur. Visitors can rent brightly colored pedal boats to cruise on the calm waters, while in the evening, illuminated dancing fountains create a magical spectacle reflected across the lake.

Bordered by lively street-food stalls serving famous Madaripur sweetmeats, fresh juices, and spicy snacks, Shakuni Lake is the vibrant social, cultural, and natural heartbeat of Madaripur.

History & Culture

The lake was excavated in 1943 during the British colonial period to relieve acute local water scarcity and provide flood management for the growing town.

During the 1971 Liberation War, Madaripur was a fiercely contested sector where local freedom fighters mounted heroic resistance against occupying forces.

The modern beautification project successfully preserved the lake's ecological integrity while creating one of the most attractive urban public waterfronts in southern Bangladesh.
