Satla Red Water Lily Village & Wetland

Satla Red Water Lily Village (Satla Lal Shapla Beel or the Water Lily Kingdom of Bengal) is one of the most breathtaking, surreal, and internationally renowned natural floral wonders in Bangladesh, situated in Satla union of Uzirpur upazila in Barishal district, roughly 38 kilometres northwest of Barishal city.

Covering an immense area of over 10,000 acres of interconnected wetlands, tidal canals, and flooded agricultural marshes, the entire landscape transforms during the autumn months (September to December) into an endless, dazzling sea of vibrant crimson-red water lilies (Lal Shapla, the national flower of Bangladesh).

Every morning before sunrise, as dawn mist rises off the water and the first golden rays of sunlight pierce the sky, millions of red water lily blossoms unfurl simultaneously across the water surface, creating a jaw-dropping crimson carpet stretching as far as the eye can see.

Visitors hire traditional wooden paddle dinghies (Nouka) steered by local village boatmen to glide silently through narrow floral channels. Local farmers and children harvest water lilies from their wooden canoes, offering travelers an enchanting, fairy-tale encounter with rural Bengal's untouched natural serenity.

With picturesque wooden stilt homesteads, rustic bamboo bridges, and fresh rural air, Satla Shapla Beel is an unmissable paradise for nature lovers, eco-tourists, and photographers.

Satla's natural low-lying alluvial wetland ecology has fostered the wild propagation of red water lilies naturally for centuries without artificial planting.

The local community relies on water lilies for multi-purpose livelihood: harvesting flower stems as organic vegetables sold across southern markets, and extracting wild honey and fish.

In recent years, Satla emerged as a premier eco-tourism destination in southern Bangladesh, drawing photographers and travelers from across the world.

September to November: Peak blooming season; millions of red water lilies cover the entire 10,000-acre wetland.

5:30 AM to 8:30 AM: Essential daily timing; water lily blossoms open at dawn and begin closing as the midday sun warms the water.

December: Late blooming season with cool, crisp winter morning mist.
