Sujabad Mughal Fort (popularly known as Sujabad Kella or Mughal Fort of Nalchhiti) is a prominent 17th-century military and naval heritage site in southern Bangladesh, situated in Sujabad village of Nalchhiti upazila in Jhalokathi district, along the picturesque banks of the Sugandha River, roughly 6 kilometres south of Jhalokathi town.
Constructed in 1639 CE by Subahdar Prince Shah Shuja (the Mughal governor of Bengal and son of Emperor Shah Jahan), the fortress was strategically engineered to protect the lower delta waterways of Barishal and Jhalokathi from destructive Portuguese buccaneers and Arakanese (Magh) pirates who raided river settlements.
The fort was designed with a massive rectangular perimeter enclosed by high brick and earthen ramparts, flanked by corner watchtowers and protected by a deep perimeter water moat connected directly to the Sugandha River. Mughal warships (Nawara flotilla) were stationed here to monitor maritime traffic and secure regional trade.
Today, the site preserves historic brick defense walls, remnants of sentry posts, ancient water tanks (dighis), and shaded riverside walks beneath century-old trees, offering history buffs a fascinating glimpse into Mughal coastal defense.
