Rijuk Waterfall

Rijuk Waterfall (Rijuk Jhorna) is one of the most majestic and dramatic natural waterfalls in Bangladesh, situated along the upper reaches of the pristine Sangu River in Ruma upazila of Bandarban district. Fed by perennial mountain springs deep in the high hill ranges, the waterfall plunges from a towering height of approximately 300 feet (90 metres) over dark, jagged rock cliffs directly into the river below.

What makes Rijuk unique is its direct riverfront orientation. Unlike many waterfalls requiring arduous jungle hikes, Rijuk is approached by riding a traditional motorized wooden engine boat (Nouka) along the picturesque Sangu River from Ruma Bazar. As the boat approaches the falls, the deafening roar of falling water and the cool, invigorating spray of mist envelop travelers.

The waterfall flows vigorously all year round, though during the monsoon and post-monsoon months from June to October, it transforms into an immense, roaring wall of white foam that creates dazzling rainbows in the morning sunlight.

Visiting Rijuk Waterfall is an integral highlight of any travel itinerary to Ruma, Keokradong, or Boga Lake, offering travelers an exhilarating blend of river cruising and raw natural beauty.

In the local Marma and Bawm indigenous languages, the waterfall is associated with ancient folklore regarding the protective spirits of the Sangu River valley.

For centuries, local indigenous villagers navigated the river by bamboo rafts, using the waterfall pool as a landmark during journeys between Ruma and deep hill settlements.

With the development of regulated eco-tourism in Bandarban, Rijuk became one of the most celebrated and accessible river cascades in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

July to October: Peak monsoon season; waterfall is at its most thunderous and magnificent.

November to February: Dry winter; clear turquoise Sangu River waters, pleasant sunshine, and comfortable boat rides.

March to May: Pre-monsoon; warm weather, with steady spring-fed waterfall flow.
