Niladri Lake

Niladri Lake, located at Tekerghat in Tahirpur, Sunamganj, is one of the most stunning lakes in Bangladesh. It is situated right near the Meghalaya border and is famous for its deep blue water, which locals and travel bloggers often describe as a striking 'garo nil' (গাঢ় নীল) color. The lake was formed from a former limestone quarry, whose minerals contribute to the water's unique hue.

Stretching roughly 2 km in length and around 600 to 800 metres across, Niladri is framed by forested hills and the rolling green tea gardens that define the wider Sylhet region. A small island, often referred to locally as the Resort or Nakagaon area, sits in the middle of the water and serves as a popular spot for picnics and relaxed day visits. The lake's modest size makes it easy to explore without feeling rushed, while its setting rewards anyone who lingers a little longer than planned.

Reaching the island and taking in the best of the scenery is typically done by small engine boat from the Tekerghat shoreline, which forms the main way visitors enjoy the lake. As a relatively new destination, Niladri has grown steadily in popularity with day-trippers travelling from Sunamganj and Sylhet city, drawn by its accessibility and unspoiled feel. It is a place that feels off the beaten track while remaining comfortably within reach for a short getaway.

In the dry season the water lies glass-still, producing mirror-like reflections of the surrounding hills and sky, while in the monsoon the lake merges with the floodwaters of Tanguar Haor to create a very different but equally atmospheric landscape. A basic eco-resort and a small number of guesthouses have grown up at Tekerghat to serve visitors, making a half-day visit or a leisurely overnight stay both entirely feasible. Whether you arrive for a morning boat ride, a quiet afternoon on the island, or a calm evening by the water, Niladri offers a refreshing taste of Sylhet's quieter side.

Niladri Lake is an artificial reservoir rather than a natural waterbody, developed to serve the local area of Tekerghat in the Dharmapasha upazila of Sunamganj. Its setting, close to the Jadukata River and along the route between Sunamganj town and the larger Tanguar Haor, has shaped how visitors experience it today. As word of its calm waters, forested backdrop and central island has spread, the lake has become an increasingly popular choice for day-trippers from Sunamganj town and Sylhet city. A small eco-resort and a handful of guesthouses have grown up at Tekerghat to meet this new demand, while small engine boats now form the principal means of exploring the water. Its relative newness is part of its appeal, offering visitors a quieter, less commercialised experience than many of Bangladesh's better-known tourist spots.

October to March is widely considered the best window for a visit, with calm water, clear skies and comfortable temperatures that suit boat rides and time spent on the island. This is also when the mirror-like reflections of the surrounding hills are most pronounced.

During the dry season more broadly, the lake sits still and serene, making it ideal for photography, picnics and gentle boat trips. Services at Tekerghat are easier to access during these months and the roads are in their best condition.

In the monsoon, Niladri merges with the floodwaters of Tanguar Haor, creating a very different but still atmospheric landscape. The scenery changes character entirely, so visitors in this season should expect a wilder, more water-dominated experience.
