Overview

Mongla is a working port town on the Pashur river in Bagerhat district, around 48 km south of Khulna city. As the country's second-largest seaport after Chattogram, it serves as the main port of entry for the entire south-west of Bangladesh, including the Sundarbans. The modern port was opened in 1950 to relieve pressure on Chattogram, and has since grown to handle bulk cargo, container traffic and occasional cruise calls.

For travellers, Mongla's real draw is its role as the principal gateway to the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Boats and tour operators offer multi-day trips into the forest from here, with launches running to entry points such as Hiron Point and Kotka. Many visitors pass straight through Mongla on their way to or from the Sundarbans rather than spending long in the town itself.

The town is small and functional, but the riverfront and port area have a lively, atmospheric quality, busy with launches, fishing boats and cargo vessels. Set within the wider Sundarbans delta, the surrounding landscape is flat and water-led, defined by river channels, mudflats and small neighbouring ports. It is a place whose appeal lies less in sightseeing and more in the sense of arriving at the edge of a vast natural wilderness.

Mongla also makes a natural pairing with the historic sites of nearby Bagerhat town, including the Sixty Dome Mosque and the tomb of Khan Jahan Ali. Together with the Sundarbans, these form a compelling south-west heritage loop, blending trade, river life, mangrove wilderness and centuries of Islamic architecture within easy reach of Khulna.

History & Culture

Mongla's rise as a port dates to 1950, when the modern facility was opened to relieve Chattogram and serve the south-west of the country. The location on the Pashur river gave it direct access to the Sundarbans delta and the wider hinterland of Khulna division, and over the decades it has been expanded to handle bulk cargo, container traffic and cruise calls.

Today Mongla is the principal seaport for south-western Bangladesh and the main point of entry for travellers heading into the Sundarbans. The town itself remains modest and functional, but its role as a regional gateway, both for trade and for mangrove tourism, gives it an outsized importance well beyond its size.
