Overview

Suhrawardy Udyan (formerly the historic Ramna Race Course) is an expansive 68-acre national heritage park situated in the heart of Dhaka between Shahbagh and the University of Dhaka. It is undeniably one of the most sanctified historical grounds in Bangladesh, having served as the stage for epochal milestones in the nation's birth.

It was here on 7 March 1971 that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his historic speech before a million people, declaring: 'The struggle this time is the struggle for our emancipation; the struggle this time is the struggle for independence.' Nine months later, on 16 December 1971, the Instrument of Surrender was signed on these very grounds, marking the glorious victory of the Bangladesh Liberation War.

Today, the park is anchored by the magnificent Independence Monument (Swadhinata Stambha), featuring a 150-foot illuminated Glass Tower that shines like a beacon across the capital at night. Beneath the memorial lies the subterranean Museum of Independence, an evocative underground gallery displaying historical photographs, terracotta murals, and documents tracing the nation's freedom struggle.

Surrounding the monument is the Shikha Chirantan (Eternal Flame), an expansive reflecting pool, open-air amphitheater, and shaded tree-lined walkways, providing citizens and international visitors with a serene sanctuary of remembrance and green recreation.

History & Culture

In the British colonial era, the grounds served as the Ramna Race Course for horse racing and elite military parades.

Following independence in 1971, the park was renamed Suhrawardy Udyan in honor of prominent statesman Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy.

The modern national memorial complex, including the Glass Tower and subterranean museum, was designed by renowned architects Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury and Marina Tabassum, opening to national acclaim.
