Ranikhong Catholic Church & Hilltop Mission

Ranikhong Catholic Church (Ranikhong Mission & St. Joseph's Church) is one of the most picturesque, historically celebrated, and spiritually peaceful hilltop landmarks in Bangladesh, situated in Ranikhong village of Durgapur upazila in Netrokona district, directly along the international border with India. Established in 1910 by Catholic missionaries, the church sits majestically atop a high green hillock overlooking the emerald-turquoise curves of the Shomeshwari River.

The church is built in classical European Gothic revival architecture, featuring a soaring bell tower, pointed-arch stained glass windows, high wooden rafters, and polished brick facades. Approached by a grand stone staircase ascending through flowering gardens and tall mahogany trees, the summit compound radiates an atmosphere of deep tranquility and spiritual grace.

From the open terrace of the hilltop mission, visitors are rewarded with an astonishing panoramic vista: below, the crystalline waters of the Shomeshwari River meander through white sandbars; directly to the north, the colossal forested mountains of the Garo Hills in Meghalaya, India, rise into mist-draped peaks.

The mission has played a transformative role in the cultural, educational, and social life of the indigenous Garo (A'chik) and Hajong communities for over a century, establishing schools, hospitals, and preserving indigenous languages.

Combining historical architecture, panoramic river-mountain vistas, and rich indigenous heritage, Ranikhong Mission is an unmissable highlight of any travel journey to Birishiri.

In 1910, French and Belgian Catholic missionaries led by Father Adolphe established the Ranikhong mission atop the hillock to serve indigenous Garo communities across the border valleys.

The mission established St. Joseph's High School and community health clinics, fostering literacy and community leadership among indigenous youth.

During the 1971 Liberation War, the mission provided humanitarian refuge and medical aid to local villagers and freedom fighters operating in the border sectors.

Today, it stands as a celebrated cultural monument and active parish church, welcoming visitors and pilgrims of all faiths.
