Overview

Nilsagar (popularly known as Nilsagor or historic Virat Dighi) is the premier historical, ecological, and recreational landmark of Nilphamari district, situated in Gorgram union, approximately 14 kilometres northwest of Nilphamari town. Spanning an immense area of over 54 acres (21.7 hectares) with deep, crystalline turquoise-blue waters, this royal water reservoir is steeped in ancient history, folklore, and natural beauty.

According to ancient Puranic tradition and local folklore, the lake was excavated in the 8th century CE by King Virat (the celebrated monarch of the Matsya Kingdom mentioned in the Mahabharata epics) to provide pure water for his royal cattle herds and subjects, originally naming it 'Virat Dighi' (or Birat Dighi).

The lake is surrounded by elevated, heavily forested earthen embankments densely planted with towering mahogany, teak, bamboo, and blooming royal poinciana (krishnachura) trees. During the winter months from November to March, Nilsagar transforms into a world-class migratory bird sanctuary, attracting hundreds of thousands of winter waterfowl including whistling ducks, pintails, egrets, and cormorants that roost across the tranquil waters.

Featuring a paved 2-kilometre perimeter walking promenade, landscaped picnic gazebos, resident spotted deer enclosures, and a serene Shiva temple on its bank, Nilsagar is a magnificent eco-park and heritage sanctuary.

History & Culture

Excavated in the 8th century CE during the reign of King Virat, the lake served as a monumental royal reservoir on the northern trade highway.

In 1979, the historic dighi was extensively renovated and re-landscaped under the leadership of the then-Subdivisional Officer (SDO) of Nilphamari, who renamed it 'Nilsagar' in honor of the district's name.

The district administration developed modern eco-park amenities, jogging tracks, and deer sanctuaries, preserving the lake's rich biodiversity and historical legacy.
