Established in the early 19th century by Zamindar Raja Janaki Ballav Sen, the estate was the aristocratic administrative and cultural hub of northern Rangpur division.
The palace complex is approached through an imposing arched brick ceremonial gateway that opens onto a spacious brick-paved courtyard. The main two-storey residential palace (Rajbari) displays classical Victorian neoclassical architecture, with grand Corinthian columns, arched verandas, decorative plaster cornices, and vintage wrought-iron railings.
The estate encompasses numerous historic structures, including the royal Kachhari (administrative court chambers), an ornate theatrical Natmandir pavilion, ancient Hindu family temples, royal horse stables, and two massive royal water reservoirs (Rajbari Dighis) lined with masonry bathing stairs.

The Dimla zamindari estate was founded in the early 1800s by Raja Janaki Ballav Sen, who acquired extensive landholdings across Nilphamari, Rangpur, and Cooch Behar.
His son, Raja Janakinath Sen, was a generous patron of classical music, literature, and education, hosting lavish cultural festivals at the palace Natmandir.
