Overview

Dhanbari Nawab Palace (also operated as the Nawab Bari Royal Resort) is a breathtaking heritage estate located in Dhanbari upazila of Tangail district. Dating back over a century, the palace was the stately residence of Nawab Bahadur Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury (1863–1929), one of the pioneering founders of the University of Dhaka and the first Muslim minister from undivided Bengal under British rule.

The palace complex spans lush grounds and showcases an exquisite blend of British colonial neoclassical and Mughal architectural styles. Visitors are greeted by grand Romanesque pillars, sweeping verandas, intricate colored glass fanlights, antique chandeliers, and hand-carved teakwood furniture imported from Europe during the height of the zamindari era.

The compound includes several historic structures: the grand Manzil (palace residence), the vintage Palace Cottage, a heritage guest wing, a magnificent Mughal-style mosque adorned with porcelain mosaic tiles, and an immense dighi (water reservoir). In a unique living heritage tradition, Quranic recitation has continued non-stop at the Nawab's tomb within the complex for nearly a century.

Today, parts of the palace have been preserved as a heritage boutique resort, allowing travelers the rare privilege of spending the night in authentic royal suites while exploring Tangail's rich cultural and handloom saree heritage.

History & Culture

The Dhanbari estate was established in the late Mughal period and rose to great political and social prominence under Nawab Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury in the early 20th century.

Nawab Ali Chowdhury was a visionary educationist who played an instrumental role in passing the Dhaka University Act and donated generously to establish premier educational institutions across Bengal.
