Chanchra Shiva Temple (Sri Sri Shiva Mandir of Chanchra Rajbari) is one of the most architecturally exquisite and historically renowned Hindu heritage monuments in southwestern Bangladesh, situated in Chanchra village just 3 kilometres south of Jashore city centre. Built in 1696 CE (1618 Saka era) by Raja Manohar Roy, this magnificent temple stands as the crowning jewel of the historic Chanchra Kingdom.
The temple is designed in the classical Bengal 'At-Chala' (eight-roofed) architectural style, featuring a curved four-sided lower roof surmounted by a miniature four-sided upper chala roof, crowned by brass kalasa finials. Constructed entirely of kiln-fired terracotta brick with lime-surki mortar, the temple's eastern and southern facades are adorned with breathtaking terracotta relief plaques.
These intricate 300-year-old terracotta carvings depict scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics, Lord Krishna's divine sports (Raas Leela), floral rosettes, court processions with royal elephants and cavalry, and traditional Bengali folk motifs. The Chanchra royal dynasty was founded in the late 16th century by Bhabeshwar Roy, a prominent general who helped suppress rebel feudal lords in southern Bengal during Emperor Akbar's reign.
In 1696 CE, Raja Manohar Roy, a devout patron of art and literature, commissioned master temple artisans from across Bengal to construct this monumental terracotta Shiva shrine.
