Overview
Bihar Dhap (locally known as Totaram Panditer Dhap or Bihar Vihara) is an immense and historically significant 8th-century Buddhist archaeological monastic complex situated in Bihar village of Shibganj upazila in Bogura district, approximately 6 kilometres northwest of the ancient citadel of Mahasthangarh. Dating to the glorious Pala Empire (8th–9th century CE), it was one of the largest Buddhist monastic universities in ancient Pundranagara.
The site consists of a massive elevated brick mound measuring 250 feet by 220 feet, rising over 30 feet above the surrounding agricultural plains. Systematic archaeological excavations by the Department of Archaeology revealed a grand cruciform Buddhist monastery comprising 37 monastic cells (bhikshu kutirs) arranged around a central pillared prayer hall, high stupas, masonry drainage channels, and fortified perimeter walls.
Excavations yielded extraordinary archaeological treasures, including exquisitely carved Pala-era terracotta plaques depicting Buddha in Dhyana mudra, celestial dancers, peacocks, elephants, bronze votive stupas, and ancient clay seals inscribed in proto-Bengali Brahmi script. Shaded by ancient banyan trees overlooking the scenic Karatoya river valley, the site radiates an aura of deep monastic peace.
Together with Mahasthangarh, Vasu Bihar, and Gokul Medh, Bihar Dhap forms a cornerstone of Bangladesh's UNESCO-worthy ancient Buddhist heritage corridor.
History & Culture
Constructed during the reign of Pala Emperor Dharmapala or Devapala (8th–9th century CE), the monastery was a prominent center of Mahayana Buddhist higher learning visited by scholars across Asia.
7th-century Chinese traveler Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) described the flourishing monasteries of Pundravardhana, which likely included the extensive monastic complexes around Bihar Dhap.
