Sonadia Island

Separated from Moheshkhali Island by a narrow channel, Sonadia is a small, crescent-shaped island that feels a world away from the busy beaches of the mainland. Spanning roughly 9 square kilometers, the island remains largely untouched by commercial tourism, preserving its raw, natural beauty.

Sonadia is most famous for its incredible wildlife. The pristine, quiet beaches are overrun by thousands of tiny red crabs that scurry across the sand, painting the shoreline red. The island is also bordered by dense mangrove forests and serves as a critical sanctuary for migratory birds and sea turtles, which come ashore to lay their eggs during the winter months.

With a very small local population primarily engaged in fishing and drying fish (shutki), Sonadia offers a true off-the-grid experience. It is a favorite destination for adventurous travelers seeking to camp under the stars, listen to the crashing waves, and experience the untouched coastal wilderness of Bangladesh.

The name Sonadia translates to 'Golden Island', named perhaps for the golden hue of its sandy beaches at sunset. For decades, it has been a quiet fishing outpost.

In recent years, the island has gained ecological importance. It was declared an Ecologically Critical Area (ECA) by the government to protect its fragile mangrove ecosystem, sea turtle nesting grounds, and the wintering habitats of rare migratory shorebirds like the Spoon-billed Sandpiper.

Winter (November to February): The sea is calm, making the boat journey safe. The weather is dry and cool, perfect for beach camping, and migratory birds are present.

Monsoon (June to September): Access is very difficult and dangerous due to rough seas. Tourism essentially stops during this period.
